The 100 BMC and Provident
Hospital of Cook County jointly sponsor the "4 Men Only" Health and
Wellness Fair. The event is held on a Saturday in April at Provident
Hospital 500 East 51st Street, Chicago, Illinois. The fair offers free
prostate, HIV, cholesterol, diabetic and hypertension and podiatry
screenings. Health forums are held on dental education, male sexual
dysfunction and prostate disease and holistic health.
Vendors have included Soul
Vegetarian Restaurant, 2nd District Police, Project Brotherhood, Human
Grooming, Cain’s Barber College, Asthma education, Diabetes Education, HIV
Education and ESPN. The event is publicized in N’DIGO, The Chicago
Tribune, Hyde Park Herald, The Chicago Defender, Resident’s Journal and
Outlook. Public service announcements were made on the following media
outlets: V103, WGCI, WVON, WLS, WKKC and CAN-TV.
During the first Health &
Wellness Fair in 2001, 100BMC Member, Reverend Tolliver opened the event
with an invocation. The event was staffed by six physicians for prostate
screening, nursing staff for blood pressure screening, clerical staff for
registration and paperwork completion, phlebotomists to draw blood for PSA,
cholesterol, HIV and glucose screening, volunteers from the 100 BMC helped
with traffic flow, etc. Raffle tickets were distributed to all
participants for an hourly raffle. A jazz band provided entertainment.
