to '06 - Living the Legacy

Esprit de Fraternite’
By Charles H. Garvin
Fourth General President, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

An Alpha Phi Alpha man’s attitude should not be “how much can I derive from the Fraternity” but “how much can I do for the Fraternity?” In proportion to what he does for his Chapter and for Alpha Phi Alpha will a member receive lasting benefits from the Fraternity to himself in the way of self-development by duty well done, and the respect of the Brothers well served.

A member’s duties should be:

1. Prompt payment of all financial obligations, the prime requisite for successful fraternal life.

2. The doing of good scholastic work in his chosen vocation, thereby accomplishing the real end of a college course.

3. The reasonable endeavor to participate in general college activities and social service and to excel therein.

4. The proper consideration of all things with appropriate attention to the high moral standard of Alpha Phi Alpha.

Brother Charles H. Garvin, our Fourth General President, understood clearly what our Beloved Founding Jewels had in mind when they created Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. This campaign theme 06 –06 Living the Legacy places the Jewels vision directly in the forefront of our aspirations. As Alpha men and brothers, we must strive ceaselessly to be the Alpha men and brothers we dedicated our lives to becoming. We must live this Legacy they created. As we move toward our centennial let us rededicate ourselves to this effort.

Living The Legacy
By Darryl R. Matthews, Sr.

Candidate for 32nd General President, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

Our great organization was founded nearly one hundred years ago from the seeds of social and economic unrest and inequality. Forged together by seven distinct individuals committed to the principles of leadership, scholarship, and service. All who have followed have taken this charge to impact our communities.

As we approach our centennial anniversary let us rededicate ourselves to those guiding principles. Brothers, we must re-cast ourselves in this timeless mold, preparing ourselves to address the problems and issues of the present and future. We must pay homage to our past, while maintaining our relevance and importance. We must LIVE that great ALPHA LEGACY!

Elect Darryl R. Matthews, Sr., 32nd General President

Bro. Matthews with his family (L to R) Wife, Allison; Sons, Julian, Blake, and Darryl Jr.
