Sankofa Foundation

The Greek Medley

The Sankofa Foundation

Sankofa is a word from the Akan language, which is spoken by the people of southern Ghana and adjacent Côte d'Ivoire. Literally translated, Sankofa means:

"We must go back and reclaim our past so we can move forward; so we understand why and how we came to be who we are today."

The purpose of the Sankofa Foundation is to provide educational workshops, forums, lectures, and/or panels on topics relevant to the community at large, but in particular to those students transitioning from a junior college to a four-year college or university.

Established in January of 2003, The Sankofa Foundation will become the fundraising entity of the NPHC, Chicago, making the Sankofa Awards Breakfast our main fundraising event.

The Sankofa Foundation will also provide one-day workshops for the educational enlightenment and enrichment of junior college students. The Annual Scholarship Award will provide financial support to students who will graduate from a junior college, or 2-year institution, and planning to attend a 4-year college or university. All applicants for the Scholarship Award must provide their acceptance letters before the scholarship monies are released.
